This is a good axiom for biologists, but its sort of backwards when you look at MIT undergraduate dorms and their cultures. You see, I have this theory that for MIT dorms, function follows structure. Or, to be more descriptive, geography and physical structure have a causal relationship with a dorms culture. Let me explain Take the East Campus/West Campus divide. As Ive mentioned before, culturally speaking, East Campus, Senior Haus, and Random Hall are East (even though Random is not actually east of Mass Ave) and Baker, Burton-Conner, McCormick, Macgregor, New House, Next House, and Simmons are West. Bexley is not really either. West Campus people are generally considered more conventional and normal (though really, theres a limit to how normal anyone at MIT is), with hobbies, decorating styles, and group cultures that reflect this. East Campus people, such as myself, are unconventional and weird, even relative to the general MIT population. How did this happen? There are personality differences among the East Campus dorms, among the West Campus dorms, and among the halls and entries in those dorms. With such living group diversity, how is it that geography ended up such a predictor of normal vs. weird? Except for Simmons, which is across the athletic field from the rest of West Campus, all the West Campus dorms are on Amherst Alley, also called Dorm Row. Most of them have little lawns. Some, such as Baker, are architectural landmarks, and many of them are very pretty. There are no academic buildings in this area of campus, but in addition to the many dorms it includes the Student Center, the Z-Center (and other athletic facilities), and the athletic playing field. These features pretty dorms grouped together, student hangouts, sports, having their own space set apart from the academic buildings are all markers of a traditional college residential area, and a traditional college experience. The geographical locations of the East Campus dorms are very different. East Campus and Senior Haus are in the midst of the academic buildings, only a few feet away from the Media Lab, the right-triangular building 66, the Green Building, and others. Random is near Central Square. All of these are very industrial, rather inhospitable-looking locations. These dorms are old and dingy. East Campus looks more like barracks than a dorm. Random has no place for green space; its denizens instead enjoy the outdoors on their roofdeck. East Campus has its courtyard in which the grass refuses to grow. Senior Haus has its courtyard concrete, bare, and sometimes graffitied, with the Tree that Drinks Blood and the tire swing in the middle. Go inside any of these dorms and find brightly-colored walls (and sometimes lights), ripped carpets, chipped and broken drywall, narrow hallways. These dorms are situated in the middle of bustling activity nearly all the time. The large athletic and student fac ilities are absent. This, of course, is all leading up to the observation that the geographical environment of any of these dorms does not remotely resemble a traditional college anything. Is it really so surprising, then, that over the decades the West Campus dorms attracted normal undergrads and the East Campus dorms attracted weird ones? They gravitated toward environments that suited them, and then they built cultures that reflected their personalities and their environment, which made students of either what have now come to be West and East persuasion even more likely to choose the environments they would have likely sought anyway. I have always regarded Bexley as a mixture of East and West Campus cultural traits, and interestingly, it is also in a mixture of East and West Campus geography at the beginning of Dorm Row, but bordering busy Mass Ave and just across from the western fringe of the academic buildings. I know that when I was first looking at dorms, the location of East Campus was a big draw for me. It seemed more alive, more intense. It gave me a feeling that MIT, its hallways and structures and secrets, belonged to me, rather than simply being a place where I attended classes. I dont think its a coincidence that so many East Campus people become roof and tunnel hackers, learning about MIT, the physical place, to an unsurpassed degree its a more natural activity for the weird people, but more than that, when youre in the midst of a place, its yours, and you are part of it, and can feel it pulse with life, and you desire to understand it, to reveal its secrets to yourself. Even the ugly industrial-ness of the area drew me. This, too, made it seem more alive. I step a few feet outside my dorm to the academic buildings, descend to the basement, and feel the waxed bumps beneath my bare feet, and bask in the hum of the machines. Theres a strange peace in feeling at one with a place. The dingy barracks that are the outside of East Campus complement the beat-up, debris-laden, colorful, surreal, unexpected worn beauty of the halls. Even between West or East Campus dorms, I can see the influence of structure on culture. Senior Haus, which with its concrete courtyard outside and narrow hallways inside, has the most punkish urban-ghetto texture of any of the dorms this is a place you can imagine the Ramones living if theyd been MIT students and attracts the punks (who then paint the walls with graffiti, blast punk music into the courtyard, and attract more punks). East Campus and Random, buildings which give off less of a spiked-hair-leather-jacket-studded-collar impression when you walk up to them (were talking even before you go inside), attract more of the builders and twinkies. Macgregor has all singles and is mostly a tall tower; to access lots of people you have to make the effort to go between floors and this makes a dorm famous for introverts. Does this hold true for FSILGs? Somone who lives in an FSILG might have more insight, but my experience is, not much. This might be because FSILGs tend to locate themselves in whatever nice house they can acquire, and because if an FSILG moves to a new house, as some of them do from time to time, a pre-existing culture is moving into a location rather than a new culture being formed in one. My theory has interesting implications for Simmons, MITs newest dorm, only a few years old. It is West Campus, and near most of the same facilities that the other West Campus dorms arebut as it is on Vassar Street rather than Dorm Row, the setting is more industrial than for the rest of West Campus, and the building looks like a robot monster from a bad sci-fi movie. Not traditional fare. On the other hand, it is new and luxurious, which are more West attributes. Its culture is still very young and not well-formed. Interestingly, its becoming known as a West Campus dorm with subtle East flavors, which is consistent with what I would have guessed.

Prepared to Walk Away Are you prepared to walk away from everything? This rarely asked question shapes one of the most important principles in my life. We are all familiar with the age-old hypothetical in which our home is burning and we must grab only the things that are most important to us. Of course, most of us would not dash into the inferno and reach for material items firstâ€"we’d ensure the safety of our loved ones and pets. Then, once they were safe, we’d grab only the irreplaceable thingsâ€"photos, hard drives, family heirlooms. Everything else would be lost in the conflagration. I like to look at this thought experiment differently, though, taking the theoretical a bit further. There is a scene in Heat in which Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) says, “Allow nothing in your life that you cannot walk out on in 30 seconds flat.” Although my life is nothing like McCauley’s (he’s the films bad guy), I share his sentiment. Almost everything I bring into my lifeâ€"possessions, ideas, habits, and even relationshipsâ€"I must be able to walk away from at a moment’s notice. Many readers will disagree because this credo sounds crass. But Id like to posit that its the opposite: our preparedness to walk away is the ultimate form of caring. If I purchase new physical goods, I need to make certain I don’t assign them too much meaning. Being able to walk away means I won’t ever get too attached to my belongings, and being unattached to stuff makes our lives tremendously flexibleâ€"filled with opportunity. If I take on a new idea or habit, I do so because it has the potential to benefit my life. New ideas shape the future Me. Same goes for habits. Over time my ideas change, improve, and expand, and my current habits get replaced by new ones that continue to help me grow. Our readiness to jilt ideas or habits means we’re willing to growâ€"we’re willing to constantly pursue a better version of ourselves. If I bring a new relationship into my world, I know I must earn their love, respect, and kindness. I also expect they, too, are willing to leave should I not provide the support and understanding they require. Thus, we both must work hard to contribute to the relationship. We must communicate and remain cognizant of each other’s needs. And, above all, we must care. These fundamentalsâ€"love, communication, understanding, caringâ€"build trust, which builds a stronger connection in the long run. It sounds paradoxical, but our willingness to walk away strengthens our bond with others. And the opposite stanceâ€"being chained by obligation to a relationshipâ€"is disingenuous, a false loyalty birthed from pious placation. There are obvious exceptions to this ruleâ€"efforts we cannot easily abandon: a marriage, a business partnership, a career, a passion. The key is to have as few exceptions as possible. Crucially, even these exceptions aren’t exceptions. Marriages often end, as do businesses. People get laid off, and passions change over time. Even though we might not be able to walk away from these endeavours in “30 seconds flat,” we can ultimately decamp when these situations no longer serve us. Everything I allow into my life enters it deliberately. If my home was aflame, there’s nothing I own that can’t be replaced: All photos are scanned. All important files are backed up. And all the stuff has no real meaning. Similarly, I’m prepared to walk away from nearly anythingâ€"even the people closest to meâ€"if need be. Doing so safeguards my continued growth and improves my relationships, both of which contribute to a fulfilling, meaningful life. It was C.S. The son of a textile-mill worker and a postal employee, he was raised in a small North Carolina town and was the first person in his family to attend college. For two decades he had a successful practice as a trial lawyer, specializing in personal injury cases. A vigorous and photogenic Democrat, Edwards turned to politics in 1998, defeating the Republican incumbent to become a U.S. senator from North Carolina. In office, he served on the intelligence committee and supported such causes as affirmative action, abortion rights, and the reform of health-care insurance and campaign finance laws. Edwards ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, but was picked by the nominee, John Kerry , as his running mate. Kerry and Edwards lost to President Bush and Vice President Cheney in the Nov., 200 4, election. Edwards subsequently ran unsuccessfully for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. In 2009 it was revealed that he had had an extramarital affair and fathered an out-of-wedlock child. He was charged in 2011 with campaign funding violations arising from a cover-up of the affair, but his trial in 2012 ended largely in a mistrial, and the charges subsequently were dropped. What is the best way to learn? The best way for a person to learn depends on the person, of course. It is well know that people have different leaning styles that work best for them. The best approach for an instructor to take is to address a variety of learning styles with their teaching plan. It is also helpful to encourage students to understand their preferred leaning style. By the time students reach the college level it is often assumed that they have figured out the best and most productive way to study to retain information. Of course, this is not a correct assumption. Teachers should make students aware of the various learning styles and encourage them to consider their preferred style as they complete their studies. In todays time just one hacker can infiltrate governments and companies and release mass amounts of private information and details. The secret hacking group, Anonymous is a group of unknown hackers that have recently been hunted down by governments around the world (mainly the US and British). They should not be looked at as â€Å"domestic terrorists† but as protesting citizens. Terrorists put fear into people, but Anonymous interests the public. They have even been called â€Å"Digital Robin Hoods† (Carter, 2012). Since Anonymous mostly goes after companies and organizations they believe are corrupt or bad, and since they dont do any physical harm to anyone they should not be persecuted and put in jail. They release private information about the websites of companies, religious groups, and governments to show the public who they really are and what they are really doing. They also use a tactic called DDos which is basically where Anonymous overruns a website so muc h nobody else can then on go on that website.The U.S. government goes after anonymous hacktivists and similar groups but turns a blind eye to pro US/anti Terrorist hackers. Additionally, about 77 percent of blacks were living in the former slave states and only 27 percent were living in these states (McGuire 250). When it came to the year 1946, the manufacturing industry employed more blacks that increased to about 135 percent as compared to 1940. Additionally, the blacks also joined the industrial unions under the influence of the congress of industrial organizations. Tens of thousands of black people were employed in the industrial union while one hundred thousand black people joined the aircraft industry. The aircraft industry was organized and managed by the United Auto Workers. On the other hand, five thousand blacks entered the National Maritime Union. There was a total of 75,000 black voters in Texas and a total of 100,000 black registered voters in Georgia by the year 1946. This was before the sit-ins and the non-violent demonstrations started to occur. This calm situation lasted for almost ten years with no mass movements, overt and street demonstrations which challenged racism. While Dr. Bledsoe preaches a doctrine of hard work and humility as the key to black advancement, he retains his power as president of the college by â€Å"playing the nigger† – he scrapes, bows, and all the while deceives the powerful white men upon whose patronage his power depends. Thus Dr. Bledsoe’s supposed commitment to his race is a sham; at one point he declares that he would see every black man in the country lynched before he would give up his position of authority. What makes Dr. Bledsoe such an influential villain is that the protagonist (IM) truly did trust in him and look up to him as a role model. Bledsoe had the IM’s fate in his hands. One of the most important things to the IM was to go to college and become successful, but Bledsoe had the power to take all of that away. Bledsoe has three faces: one he shows to important whites, another he exhibits officially to the students of the college, and the private and true side he reveals to the IM. When the IM sees Bledsoe’s true nature, he soon comes to realize the corruption and malevolent methods that Dr. Bledsoe utilizes. This is the IM’s first encounter with such deep-seated corruption. The IM’s perception is that his world is at its deepest levels corrupted by certain varieties of radical dishonesty and manipulation. He sees this, when the man he idolizes, Dr. Bledsoe, is heavily entrenched in dishonesty and manipulation. Dr. Bledsoe attributes his success to a similar ability to feign humility. The power hungry Bledsoe would have done anything to keep his power, even deceive a vulnerable student or the white trustees. Bledsoe advocates lying as a good way to interact and manipulate Mr. Norton and the white trustees. His belief is that deceit is a means to obtain dignity and status. Because of Bledsoe’s false identity, the IM recognizes his grandfather’s sentiment that true treachery lies in believing in the mask of meekness. For, echoing Booker T. Washington’s philosophy, Bledsoe practices humility and preaches the virtue of humble contentment with one’s place; but, in fact, he uses his seeming passivity to mask his true aims. Bledsoe employs this mask of meekness not only as a method of self-preservation or even self-empowerment but also as a method of actively grabbing power. He uses the college and Washington’s ideology to gain a position of power rather than to achieve broad social progress for his people (something that the IM initially looked up to him for). Bledsoe’s declaration that he has â€Å"played the nigger† long and hard to get to his position and won’t have one young, naive student erase his accomplishments reveals his priorities: his concern for the college’s image masks his greater fear that his own image will be defiled and his power stripped. The IM’s grandfather advised his family to use masks as a form of self-defense and resistance against racist white power, but Bledsoe uses masks as a weapon against members of his own race. Moreover, he uses deception to achieve an influential position within the white-dominated power structure rather than to dismantle that structure. One can argue that Bledsoe’s character shows the ultimate limitations of the grandfather’s philosophy: African Americans will not win true power for themselves as a people if they continue to lead double lives. This is a major theme in the novel, and it’s something that the IM does not truly understand until the end of the book. Dr. Bledsoe, although a villain to the IM and to the entire black community, the IM is still able to learn a lot about him when it comes to his invisibility. The IM learns that to be invisible is to be unacknowledged by others, and he learns that by â€Å"playing a role† or pretending to be something that you are not (mask’s) you end up losing your true self and sense of identity. Behind the many masks of Bledsoe, he ends up getting lost in his multiple identities and does not know who he is. Bledsoe seems to be blind to the fact that he too is black, and although he may have a higher position than other blacks, he is still â€Å"invisible† in the eyes of the white people to whom he â€Å"sucks up† to. Dr. Bledsoe is a villain who seems to be lost in his own evil, power hungry motives. Dr. Bledsoe is blind to the truth of his own identity, and therefore it causes the IM to rethink his life. Bledsoe serves as a villain because of the many roles he played to fool people. He did not care about anyone else but himself. Bledsoe had many twisted morals, but the protagonist, the IM was able to learn from Bledsoe’s blindness and ignorance. The answer is yes, conveying this teaching is possible. There are still some people who do live in this way. One person who lived this way was Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi was a man of peace from India. By no means did Gandhi resort to violence. Gandhi showed that the powerless had power. He never fought back instead he would sit and pray. Gandhi always wanted equality and peace among everyone. If someone were harm in any way, he would have never turned and hurt them. Instead he would have prayed or just ambled away. Although with his courageous words and actions he was a very powerful person he still could not control the decisions and actions of others. Gandhi once said,I have no strength, save what God gives me. I have no authority over my country men, save the purely moral. Like many of our brave and peaceful leaders Gandhi was also assassinated. He died on January 30, 1948. Everyone should be more like Gandhi. Everyone should be kind and peaceful and then the world may be an easier place to live in. Its not an easy way to live because you often act or even speak before you act. Several people often do things without thinking. Its human nature. For example if person A were to clout person B, person B would automatically strike back. This is unquestionably not what Jesus would do. There is only very few people who would actually just turn the other cheek or walk away. Instead everyone else would probably do the same or even worse than what the other person did. Another way we can follow this philosophy is by, as Jesus said, Do unto others as you would have done unto you. Think about this, no one would want someone to harm them, emotionally or physically, and the other person probably feels the same way. Verbal abuse, talking about others, judging others also part of this. This damages others, and its hard not to do this because everybody does it but just because everybody does doesnt make it right. Most people follow what the populace is doing because usually if they dont they are part of ridicule. It is easier to follow the things that others do than to go in your own path and many people will treat others badly and the ones being treated badly will usually fight back by doing the same way or by even just making the person the object of mockery. Some people just let their anger and fury get to them and then they end up doing something that they may end up regretting in the end. They try to get revenge and sometimes look at things from a different point-of-view. They see how it would be like if they were the ones being laughed at and being hurt. They end up feeling horrible about what they did in the end.
